It's here! The initiative I have been mentioning throughout the past several months, spearheaded by Dr. Peter Gray and a core group of people committed to seeking alternatives to school, is live today!
Check out AlternativesToSchool.com
It has been thrilling to be involved in this important initiative, designed to help greater numbers of parents opt-out of compulsory schooling environments and choose self-directed learning opportunities for their children.
Over the years, I have often been asked: "Home-based learning works well for your children and your family, but what about the families who can't -- for any number of reasons -- pursue home-based learning? What about them?"
AlternativesToSchool.com is part of the answer to this very important question. While home-based, self-directed learning can be one vital component to a life without schooling, there are other options that will hopefully grow in numbers and availability as more families demand something different and choose to opt-out of formal schooling. These options are described in detail on the new website and include community-based learning centers for those registered as homeschoolers but who seek self-directed, drop-off group learning spaces for their children within the larger community. They also include Democratic Schools, such as the Sudbury Valley model, that are entirely self-directed and don't resemble "school" at all. These independent "schools" are also highly affordable for families given their design and mission.
The resources that support self-directed, non-coercive, natural learning for children are spreading rapidly and will continue to gain momentum as more families seek them. As Peter Gray writes in today's Salon article on the launch of the new website: "We don’t have to force people to learn; all we need to do is provide them the freedom and opportunities to do so."
I hope you will visit and share AlternativesToSchool.com, and check back often as the website will be adding significantly more helpful content and resources in the coming weeks.
