We had our first encounter with backyard foraging/edible flowering this morning when we picked and seeped bee balm tea from our backyard perennial garden. The bee balm was planted by this home's previous owners, so I had no idea that the flowers were even edible until my friend Mariah at Mama Rise pointed it out to me recently.
How amazing! Tea from our own backyard! I continue to be astounded by nature's many gifts, and equally astounded at my complete lack of knowledge about this incredible world of growing. Now I'm hooked, hungry for as much information as I can find on edible flower gardens, medicinal herbs, and backyard foraging. The possibilities seem endless--and a bit overwhelming. I want to know everything about this topic, to plant everything possible, but I'm trying to contain my enthusiasm, move slowly, and be content with our first backyard tea.
A book (or several) might be a good place to begin. Any suggestions? What are your favorite books on planting edible flower gardens, growing medicinal herbs, and backyard foraging?
